History & Beliefs
Who We Are
First Gethsemane Baptist Church was organized in 1910 as a result of a revival effort of a group of believers desiring a greater Christian witness in an area of Louisville, Kentucky known at that time as “The Bottoms”. The church has remained a stable witness for Christ since. Originally located on Floyd Street and relocating and building on Algonquin Parkway in 1972. The present pastor, Dr. T. Vaughn Walker has served the congregation since March 1984.
First “G” is a member of the Central District Baptist Association, The General Association of Kentucky Baptist, The Bluegrass State Baptist Convention, the Kentucky Baptist Convention, The National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., The Southern Baptist Convention, and the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Missions Convention.
The church embraces a “wholistic” approach to the ministry which seeks a balanced commitment to minister to the totality of a person’s existence. This approach seeks to minister to the spiritual, physical, and intellectual aspects of a person’s life.

What We Believe
WE BELIEVE in and stand on The Holy Bible as the revealed and inspired Word of God; The Lord’s perfect revelation to humankind.
WE BELIEVE that Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, is the only way to salvation.
WE BELIEVE in a Triune God (Father, Son [Jesus Christ], and Holy Spirit) as the one and only true God.
WE BELIEVE that all believers are called and spiritually gifted for ministry service for the present age. The local church is a body of baptized believers in Jesus Christ who work in covenant relationship under the headship of Jesus and led by a Senior Pastor as overseer and under shepherd.
